Ragi and Millet Milk Recipe
Cooks in: 40 Minutes Serves: 8 People

Milk can be extracted from millets. Ragi milk is widely popular and sprouted grains are used for this purpose. Foxtail millet and Proso millet can also be used to extract milk. For this recipe I used Proso Millet. This milk can be used for making smoothies, kheer, popsicle etc. I will be sharing all those recipes soon.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. In a 3 Ltr Pressure Cooker add the millet and water. Cook for a whistle and simmer the stove to enable slow cooking for 20 minutes. Switch off and let it cool.
  2. Once cooled, take 2 cups of cooked millet, add 3.5 cups of water and blend on high speed in a mixie.
  3. Strain the milk using a strainer. Add honey and soya sauce.
  4. Blend and strain the remaining batches in the same way.
  5. Mix everything and refrigerate.
  6. The milk stays fresh for 10 days.

  1. Am planning to make Ragi milk but want to know if we have to sprout ragi before using it or can we use ragi directly? Your recipe mentions sprouted millets in the intro but doesn’t talk about it in the actual recipe. That’s why got confused. Plz clarify

    1. Hi Aparna,
Generally ragi is sprouted before extracting milk, but it is not compulsory. You can just soak and extract milk. But for other millets it’s not necessary.

  2. Hi,
I have done it with ragi soaked overnight and ground in mixer and milk extracted.will it be the same?
    Thanks in advance.

  3. Was very tempted to try millet milk today but had only ragi on hand. Yet went ahead and tried the recipe with ragi and it came out very well. Used part of it in making mango smoothie too. Both versions tasted yummy. Thanks for the recipe.

  5. Wowwww. Just 2 things

    1. Can you please suggest replacement for soya sauce. Can it be avoided?

    2. I only have a 2 ltr cooker, can we use same msmts else please suggest

Thank you very much in advance

    1. Hi Subhashree,
Thanks for your visit. You can skip soya sauce if you want. It gives some mild flavour and required salt to the milk. If you are using 2 ltr cooker, reduce the quantity of millet by 1/2 cup.

    1. Hi Dhanashree,
Soya sauce is added for light flavour and salt! Actually it gives an excellent taste! It cannot used for coffee/tea. Smoothies, museli, popsicle and kheer can be made with this milk.
